~10 miles @ ~9.1 min/mi
"See the people walking down the street / Fall in line just watching all their feet ...", sing The Go-Go's in their 1980 hit "We Got the Beat". Roadkill cranks up the car radio volume as he and Danger Man arrive for the 10 Mile Club Challenge in Columbia MD; during the race the chorus loops on his mental 8-track. We pose for photos, greet friends, line up, then dash away through drizzle that ramps up to solid rain, temps in the upper 30s, chill wind, hilly course. It's all good!
"Are you hurt?" Fellow runners are concerned when Roadkill sets a record by taking a tumble before the race even begins, as he zigs to dodge a barrier channeling runners over the starting-line timing mat. Thankfully, no harm done! Later he gets a blister on the left foot, but by good fortune an achy left hip distracts from the pain. And no more falls!
"Go Mo Co! Go Mo Co!" he chants at the end, cheering other Montgomery County club members across the finish line. Far from a PB at ~91 minutes, but half a dozen minutes ahead of last year's result on this hilly course. Mile splits: 8.0 + 8.7 + 9.1 + 8.9 + 9.3 + 9.2 + 9.3 + 9.5 + 9.0 + 9.2 on the GPS.
